Why Fighters Need More Than Just Water
Hard training removes more than fluid alone — and replacing both is what keeps performance, focus and recovery intact.

Water is essential, but for fighters, it is not always enough on its own. Every hard round, scramble, pad session and conditioning circuit raises body temperature and increases sweat loss. That sweat contains more than water. It also carries electrolytes, particularly sodium, alongside smaller amounts of potassium and magnesium.
This matters because combat sports place a unique demand on the body. BJJ athletes train in heavy gis and crowded academies. Muay Thai fighters move through rounds of pads, clinching and conditioning. MMA combines repeated bursts of striking, grappling and explosive movement, often in hot gyms with limited airflow. When fluid and electrolytes are not replaced, fighters may begin to feel heavy, unfocused and unusually fatigued as the session goes on.
Electrolytes support fluid balance, nerve function and normal muscle function. Sodium is especially important because it helps replace one of the main minerals lost through sweat and helps the body retain the fluid being consumed. Water still has an important place, and for shorter or lower-intensity sessions it may be all you need. But longer, harder and hotter sessions often require a more complete approach.
The need becomes even greater for fighters training more than once a day or returning to the mats again the following morning. Hydration is not only about finishing the current session. It is about replacing what was lost so you are ready for the next one.
The goal is not to overcomplicate things or drink as much as possible. It is to match your hydration to the demands of the session. Begin training properly hydrated, drink throughout when needed and replace meaningful fluid and electrolyte losses afterwards.
That is why fighters may need more than just water. Hard training removes more than fluid alone, and replacing both helps support performance, focus and recovery.
Hydō was built around that reality. A Combat Electrolyte Formula designed for BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai and the work that supports them. Hydration is training.
